The Bulwark is an Iron Age fort at the eastern end of Llanmadoc Hill where several battles were fought. A local legend suggests that during one gruesome encounter, the blood from the fallen warriors overflowed in such volumes that it filled up a lake –The Lake was named after their leader Tonkin who was killed in the battle. It is said he was buried nearby. This became known as Tonkin Lake, which evolved over time to become Tankey Lake.

Tankey lake Farm was the location for the film documentary ‘Dylan Thomas’ staring Richard Burton. The only Welsh film to have won an Academy Award (Oscar)
